Technical SEO for SaaS

Technical SEO built for B2B SaaS products

SaaS technical SEO is different. Most of your product is behind authentication, your site is JavaScript-heavy, and traditional SEO advice often misses the point. This guide covers what actually matters for B2B SaaS growth.

Challenges

Unique challenges and solutions

B2B SaaS products face technical SEO challenges that e-commerce and content sites do not. Here is how to solve them.

App behind authentication

Problem: the most valuable content is locked behind login, invisible to search engines. Solution: create public pages that show what the app solves, without giving access to the app itself. Feature pages, guides and case studies become your entry points from search.

JavaScript-heavy rendering

Problem: an SPA builds its content in the browser. Google can execute JavaScript, but with a delay, and many other crawlers – including most AI search bots – do not. Solution: implement server-side rendering (SSR) or static generation for public pages. Next.js, Nuxt and similar frameworks support this out of the box. That is how we moved Vodostaj.rs from a React SPA to Next.js.

Technical product language

Problem: internal product terminology does not match how users actually search. Solution: research actual search queries in your niche. Create content using user language, not internal jargon. Map technical features to user benefits.

Limited content opportunities

Problem: SaaS products have fewer natural pages than content sites. Solution: build programmatic SEO pages (integrations, use cases, comparisons), comprehensive guides, and help documentation that ranks.

Implementation

Core technical SEO elements for SaaS

Site structure

  • Clean URL hierarchy: /features/, /use-cases/, /integrations/
  • Separate marketing site from app subdomain (www vs app)
  • Proper canonical URLs across all pages
  • XML sitemap with every public page and accurate lastmod dates
  • Robots.txt properly configured

Page speed

  • Core Web Vitals optimized (LCP < 2.5s, INP < 200ms, CLS < 0.1)
  • Image optimization and lazy loading
  • Critical CSS inlined, non-critical deferred
  • JavaScript bundle optimization
  • CDN for static assets

Metadata & schema

  • Unique title tags for every page (50–60 chars)
  • Compelling meta descriptions (about 140–160 chars)
  • OpenGraph and Twitter Card tags
  • Organization schema on homepage
  • SoftwareApplication schema for product pages

Content architecture

  • Clear heading hierarchy (H1 → H2 → H3)
  • Internal linking strategy with descriptive anchors
  • FAQ sections built from real customer questions (since 2023, FAQPage schema no longer earns rich results in Google except on government and health sites)
  • Breadcrumb navigation
  • Related content recommendations
Programmatic SEO

Scale content with programmatic pages

SaaS products have limited natural pages. Programmatic SEO lets you generate hundreds of pages from templates and data – as long as each one is genuinely useful, not just a variation of the same page.

/integrations/[tool-name]

Integration pages

Why it works: high search volume for “[your product] [other tool] integration”. Template structure: how the integration works, benefits, setup guide, FAQs.

/for/[industry-or-role]

Use case pages

Why it works: users search for solutions by their specific context. Template structure: industry challenges, how the product solves them, customer stories.

/vs/[competitor]

Comparison pages

Why it works: high-intent users comparing alternatives. Template structure: feature comparison, pricing, migration guide, honest assessment.

/alternatives/[competitor]

Alternative pages

Why it works: capture users unhappy with competitors. Template structure: why users switch, key differences, testimonials from switchers.

Common SaaS SEO questions

Should I separate my marketing site from my app?

Yes. Keep your marketing site on www.domain.com and app on app.domain.com. This makes it easier to optimize the marketing site for SEO without impacting app performance or having to deal with authentication in your rendering strategy. We do the same with our own product: product pages live on solve.rs, the app on invoice.solve.rs.

How do I handle SEO for pages behind authentication?

You cannot rank pages behind login. Instead, create public-facing content that demonstrates value: feature pages, use case guides, video demos, help documentation, and case studies. Visitors and search engines see the same public pages; the app itself stays behind login.

Do I need server-side rendering for SaaS SEO?

For public marketing pages, yes – SSR or static generation. That way the HTML already contains the text and search engines can read it without running JavaScript. For the app itself behind authentication, client-side rendering is fine since search engines will not access it anyway.

What is programmatic SEO and should I use it?

Programmatic SEO means generating many similar pages from templates and data (like integration pages for every tool you integrate with). It works well for SaaS if each page provides unique value. Avoid thin content that does not help users.

How important are Core Web Vitals for SaaS?

Very important. B2B buyers evaluate product quality through every interaction, including site speed. Slow pages signal a slow product. Plus, Core Web Vitals are part of Google’s ranking signals. Aim for LCP ≤ 2.5s, INP ≤ 200ms, CLS ≤ 0.1.

Should I create comparison pages with competitors?

Yes, if done honestly. Comparison pages capture high-intent traffic and can rank well. Be fair in your assessment, acknowledge where competitors excel, and clearly explain your differentiators. Dishonest comparisons backfire.
